Free Lunch, Lose your Lunch

If you'd like to get furious about the crony-corrupt-corporate-welfare capitalism as it's practiced today in the USA then just listen to David Cay Johnson's speech to the Commonwealth Club of California (RealPlayer).

Jesus, the big-box stores get to keep all sales tax as a reward for building their store and ruining all the local businesses.

The Walton family is richer than Gates and Buffett combined.  And they get our tax revenue.

There's a tension in the room and the questions.  DCJ is a bit of a bomb-thrower for a NYT reporter.

I love it.

Thanks for the observations, but since authors have to finance their work from people actually buying books a recommendation to READ Free Lunch is much more appreciated.

Uncovering the conduct I write about costs a lot of money -- see the list of researchers in the acknowledgments section of Free Lunch, for example.

My books are not the usual ", he said"journalism that quotes what people say and is ubiquitous because it is much less expensive to produce.

Free Lunch is an investigation of what the government and the most powerful people in America actually do.

And if you read Free Lunch (and Perfectly Legal, now in paperback) I hope you will tell others about the reasons you found my books worth your time and money.

Oh, and I retired from The New York Times in April 2008.
